From the design concept through to the making of the gown, we are fascinated by the process that couturiers go through when creating a wedding dress. Read on for a snapshot into this process, as Vera Wang discusses the making of her Hilary gown.

"Hilary is really a work of art, because there are so many layers of the most exquisite laces all mended together, creating a really rich texture. It’s like putting on a Rolls Royce!

Even though Hilary’s silhouette is column-like, very sleek and streamlined, there are so many different elements in this dress; it’s a collage. Every single piece of this dress is made with a different kind of texture. But everything is combined so beautifully, so that you get a lot of detail that comes through in the layers, while still appearing very seamless and crisp overall.

You can see this especially in the train of the dress: how there’s just so much richness that shines through all the various levels. The train is layered with a new type of lace that we’re calling “honeycomb Chantilly.” It’s a Chantilly lace pattern with big, almost diamond-shaped holes. And then you have re-embroidered lace with Guipure lace on top of that, as well as an array of floating organza floral sprigs very gently drifting, almost like blossoms in a bowl of water.

Because lace is so thick by nature, when you use a lot of different laces you have to be really careful about the way in which you mend them together. You don’t want to end up with a lot of bulk and heaviness—especially when using a denser lace like Guipure, even the exaggerated, blown-up version of it that I used here. That’s why I varied the amount of Guipure lace as you move from top to bottom. At the bodice, it’s very dense, and then gradually it disperses.

This is definitely a dress for the Romanticist who still wants to be modern—it’s opulent, but understated."

We are very excited for Fiorenza's 2012 Bridal collection. The collection of 12 dresses features elongated bodices, wrapped sweetheart necklines, couture ribboning and box pleated skirts hint at 1940’s and 50’s inspirations, with bespoke fabrics designed by Fiorenza – in addition to unconventional elements such as woven horse hair braid trims to create structure and drama on delicate fabrics.

Pina Fiorenza describes her 2012 collection as “a culmination of eras coming together”, paying tribute to pioneering women in her family, and their ability to balance incredible strength with enchanting softness.

The fourth-generation designer dedicated the collection to her mother, Giuseppa Bisigenano. “This collection marks the fourth anniversary of mum’s passing, and I found myself reflecting on the fact that, despite possessing great strength, she never lost her soft femininity; raising two children in a foreign-speaking country while forging a successful career,” Ms Fiorenza said.

Fashion runs in Ms Fiorenza’s blood; from the aunt who founded one of Italy’s first design schools, through to the cousin who works with Valentino and her sister, a renowned couturist in Melbourne.

“Every year I speak to over 500 brides around Australia, and so in designing this collection I reflected on their feedback, and I revisited the gowns I’ve created over the past two decades,” she said. “I then merged these two influences to create beautiful, simple, core designs that are the best of the best; the lines are soft and fun but the patterns are strong, deliberate and complex.”

Elegant, fresh and ethereal, the 2012 Fiorenza bridal collection consists of 12 gowns that will be available in Fiorenza stores and stockists across Australia from January 2012.

Vera Wang is one of our favourite designers. Her gowns are romantic, whimsical and high fashion, while still remaining timeless and elegant. On Vera Wang's blog, Vera Unveiled, she often discusses the design concept through to the making of the gown. We love hearing the process that couturiers go through when creating a wedding dress. Read on for a snapshot into this process, as Vera Wang discusses the making of her Gracie gown.

"A sense of motion and a feeling of fluidity are two things that I always try to impart in my wedding dresses, and nowhere are these more present than in.

For Gracie, I wanted the feeling to be whimsical, langorous and organic, so it was important for it to have a very soft structure—even the cap sleeves are barely-there, created from just a whisper of beautifully transparent French tulle draped across the shoulders. It’s just enough to emphasize the sweetheart neckline of the bodice, which is also draped asymmetrically with the tulle.

The skirt, too, has a relaxed asymmetry to it, in the smocking and seaming of the tulle. The frothy volume in Gracie is so effortless and diaphanous: the deliberately and strategically placed seams make this the kind of volume that flatters, that’s never frumpy. It’s always about that langorousness. And I’ve taken it right down to the bottom of the hem: it’s bubbled, so the hem captures more air and gives that graceful swan-like, foamy effect.

Gracie is so soft and so ethereal, you might feel like all you want to do is just lay down in it, and I love the way it calls to you almost like a very, very soft pillow. It’s been a long day, after all!

Everything about Gracie is done with the softest touch. It appears as light as a feather, and it’s the perfect gown for a bride who wants something very natural, and yet very ethereal, as if it’s not quite of this world."

We love a celebrity wedding and Kate Moss's wedding was no exception! The bride wore a Galliano vintage-inspired, slim-fitting, floor-length dress featuring a smattering of sequins and delicate sheer panelling. The shoes came in the form of bespoke Manolo Blahniks, her hair was set in loose waves and her make-up was fresh and natural. And the gorgeous groom chose a double-breasted Yves Saint Laurent suit.
