The Sea of Flowers: Elie Saab Spring/Summer 2014 Couture

“Women often ask me for dresses like the bridal one I showed today. They want their dreams to come true and that's what we try to do”, said Elie Saab after showing his spring/summer 2014 couture collection in Paris. Renowned for making glamorous and feminine red carpet dresses and wedding gowns, Elie Saab is one of the most wanted couturiers in the world of celebrities. His dresses are lady-like and timeless, designed to flatter the female figure.

Saab’s latest collection was utterly romantic and classical with empire waists, soft layers and heavy embellishments. This collection was inspired by the work of nineteenth-century Dutch painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. The blue backdrop of the catwalk represented the colour of the Mediterranean Sea, making Saab's stunning gowns look even more luxurious and regal against this beautiful, hypnotic background.

Saab made his gorgeous dresses from meters of soft tulle and beautiful silk. For some of the dresses he gathered fabrics together in multiple layers creating voluminous skirts, while others were tight and semi-transparent. There were some asymmetric shapes and geometrical cuts, but his best pieces from the collection were timeless gowns embellished with thousands of hand-stitched glittery beads and floral appliqués. The colour palette was transported directly from artworks of Alma-Tadema, including sky blue, soft pink, purple, champagne gold, coral red, black and white.

Just like every Elie Saab couture collection, this one featured a lot of luxurious wedding dresses. There is a whole series of flower-studded white dresses, but some of his colourful gowns can also be worn as wedding dresses. Even though he used some dark hues, he also has plenty of bright coloured looks in champagne, pink or light blue, ideal for wedding receptions.

The last look from his show was, of course, a breathtaking voluminous wedding dress covered in delicate floral appliqués. The dress featured  a huge train creating a real fairy-tale gown for a dream wedding. The veil made from ivory tulle is tremendously stylish too! It is as long as the dress itself, but embellishments are discrete which is very chic. Any bride-to-be would love to walk down the aisle in one of Elie Saab's dresses and this collection provides a great source of inspiration to all brides-to-be.
