3 Things You Need to Know When Shopping For Your Engagement Ring

When choosing your engagement ring there are three most important things you need to know about diamonds: carat, colour and cut.

The first important thing is the weight. It is expressed in Carats (ct). One carat is equal to 0.2 grams and is divided into 100 points. This means that half a carat is described as 0.50 carats. It is one of the key factors that affects the price of the ring.

The second thing you need to know is that the most valuable diamonds don’t have a colour at all and are known as “white diamonds”. Colour therefore actually refers to the degree to which a diamond appears colourless. Diamonds are graded on a colour scale established by the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) which veries from D (colourless) to Z (strong yellow or brown). The differences between grades are very subtle and diamonds with tinges of yellow are more common than the colourless ones.

Finally, the quality of the cut is vital when choosing a diamond and it has an impact of up to 40% on the end purchase price. Even the perfectly colourless diamond will lack brilliance if poorly cut which is why this is the most important criteria. Diamonds are reflecting the light and therefore the angle and the size of the cut is crucial. A well cut diamond will have maximum of light dispersion and will seem very sparkly.

There are also many shapes of diamonds out there from round to square and rectangular stones with sharp edges. Round brilliant diamonds are the most popular shape because they are very bright and sparkly. Princess shape is also hugely popular and it features sharp, uncut corners which is very elegant. Radiant rectangular or square shaped diamonds with straight edges and cut corners are designed for maximum brilliance, while oval ones are extremely delicate and feminine.

Marquise diamonds are perfect for maximising carat weight since can they look larger than they actually are, whereas heart-shaped diamonds are the most romantic of all. Emerald shape is usually rectangular, has elongated edges and stepped facets, pear is very subtle with the rounder end which sparkles more and asscher features dramatic cut corners.

Lastly, cushion is a beautiful shape with rounded corners and 58 brilliant facets to resemble a pillow.
